Soothing Minimalism

One day, I looked at all of my belongings and instead of feeling fulfilled, I felt suffocated.

I listened closely, and in the quiet,
I heard my belongings whispering, ”We too feel trapped”.

Clothes I never wore, earrings I disliked, high-heeled shoes that hurt my feet, books gathering dust on shelves, journals filled with the pain and heartbreak of my adolescence. All of these things – prisoners in my house. And I, in turn, their prisoner.

I realized there were children out there who would enjoy reading the books if I donated them to a library, women who would rejoice in wearing the dresses I’d long forgotten in a corner of my wardrobe, and countless beings who would be more than happy to be forgiven and released from my ‘journals of pain’.

They all said, ”RELEASE US!”

And I did.

This small act of clearing and bringing order into my living space was the flutter of a butterfly’s wings which brought more movement and creative freedom. I learned that it is the simplest choices that open the door to the most profound changes.

Living a minimalist life freed space not only in my home, but in my mind and my relationships. Surprisingly, by letting go of most of my belongings, I’ve learned a new respect for material objects, for the human effort it takes to create them and to process them when we discard them.

I also fell in love with contemplating the space that holds all things.

And came to understand that all things are energy, and energy likes to flow.

My home gradually emptied and I was surrounded by ample space. It held me, it allowed me to think clearly, focus on what was truly important to me – connection to nature, to human beings and art. My meditations deepened. More fix ideas about who I was or what I needed to feel content fell away. The true WANTS of my heart could be heard and voiced.

I felt free to dance my own dance.

Since that day of welcoming simplicity, I’ve explored many aspects of Minimalism.

Minimalism as Freedom. As resistance to consumerism. As art of living. Design. Poetry. Breathing space. Environmental care. Holding womb. Verb. Flow…

I call it SOOTHING MINIMALISM.
